Managed IT is often described in vague terms. Here is a plain-English look at the work involved and what it should cover.
Managed IT is often described in vague terms, which makes it hard to compare providers or understand what you are paying for.
## The recurring work
Most of managed IT is repeatable work that keeps small problems from turning into large ones: monitoring devices, applying updates, checking backups, reviewing accounts, and documenting how the environment is configured.
## The support layer
People need somewhere to go when something breaks. A help desk gives employees a consistent place to ask for help, and gives the business a record of what has been happening.
## The planning layer
Good IT management includes looking ahead: equipment nearing end of life, licensing that no longer fits, and risks that should be addressed before they cause an outage.
## Questions worth asking
- What is monitored, and who reviews the alerts?
- How are backups verified?
- What happens when an employee leaves?
- How are technology decisions documented?
If those answers are unclear today, a review of your current environment is a reasonable place to start.
